European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
